Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.
