A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
