European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
